Organisation

The Nano Collective is a community-led organisation, not a company. This section covers how we coordinate, who is involved, and how the economics around contribution work.

How we are structured

The collective is volunteer-led today, fiscally hosted by the Open Source Collective  under whose legal and financial umbrella we operate. NC has no separate legal entity of its own. Every incoming and outgoing payment received via OSC is published transparently on the Open Collective platform, in real time, visible to anyone.

A founding core team currently stewards the collective day to day. Our explicit mission is to grow the contributor community and progressively decentralise: no single entity, including us, can or should own this infrastructure long-term. Everything in this section, from how we coordinate to how funding works, is built toward the same end: giving contributors the resources and power to build AI in the open, and keeping that capability in the community’s hands.

In this section

  • Community: where we coordinate, how to join, and how contributors collaborate across projects.
  • Economics Charter: the plain-language, publicly versioned commitment that sets out the financial terms for everyone who contributes to the Nano Collective. Read this before you invest serious time into contributing.
  • Support the Collective: how individuals and organisations can support NC through donations, sponsorship, or other means.
  • Brand Guidelines: how the Nano Collective is talked about, written about, and presented across projects. The source of truth for tagline, voice, terms to avoid, naming, and required documentation patterns.
  • Governance: how decisions get made today, how contribution works in practice, how maintainership is offered, and how the model widens as the collective grows.
  • Contributor Resources: what the collective offers to contributors and project proposers today, and what is being built toward. The contributor-facing companion to the sponsor page.

Principles we hold ourselves to

  • Transparency by default. Finances, governance, and decisions happen in the open. The Open Collective ledger and the Economics Charter are the two anchors.
  • No retrospective changes. Terms that apply when you start work continue to apply to that work, even if the charter updates later.
  • Community over company. The collective exists to serve the people building on it. Where the interests of a centralising platform and the interests of contributors diverge, we side with contributors.
